Endless Space 2 ReviewThe gameplay is pretty repetitive, and most of the mechanics are very clearly winner/loser, without much in the way of reacting. If you go down a weaker research path or have bad luck on planets, you’re screwed. There’s even a few uncommon but necessary resources for ships or upgrading, and if you don’t get them, you’re just SOL. That combined with certain resources just providing waaaaaay better upgrade choices: you could have like slightly more approval or solar system defense vs research, economic, or manufacturing bonuses.
It’s pretty easy to tell which is better, but it’s locked to what you can access, via RNG. Some enemies will just have massive boosts to themselves which you don’t get, on top of cheating AI.Maybe playing with/against more humans is interesting; I played with one friend and extermal voice chat. Games can last 20-30 hours.
Not as long as some other 4X games I’ve played, but still can take a while. Depending on the gameplay mechanics you’re emphasizing, that can also take a LOT of time. There’s paths you can take to get bonuses from a greater variety of citizens on planets, but this heavily depends on getting the necessary subcitizens, sending them to other planets, and removing existing citizens from intended planets. If this mechanic was easier to manage (why not have a “desired” citizen distribution manager, or at least steer reproduction/growth more effectively?) turns could be a lot shorter. Some of the other mechanics are super annoying (interplanetary vines that can just eat your planets if you’re not militarily berzerking) or unfeasible (Craver stuff). SummaryAny way you look at it, Endless Space 2 is one impressive achievement even taking into account the above paragraph of what are fairly minor gripes given how much this game does extremely well.
4X space sims have long been known as the territory of the serious strategy gamer, but Amplitude has broken away from the pack here. Outstanding depth and tactical challenge have been preserved, although not at the expense of the strong storytelling needed to emphasize the sense of awe and wonder in galactic exploration that’s always been a huge part of the genre’s appeal.
Amplitude has done a masterful job combining these two elements into a single game, where the quests and strategy and politics and economy are all tied into a whole much greater than the sum of its parts.
Endless Space 2 - The Horatio - PrologueIncredibly wealthy and only slightly less deranged, Horatio was a trillionaire who left to discover his own star cluster. Finding a planet sprinkled with labs of ancient cloning technology left by the Endless, the boredom soon drove Horatio to create a race of allies, servants, and slaves who were every bit as beautiful as the most beautiful person in the universe - Horatio. Once the planet was repopulated, Horatio the First had only to look up, regard the stars, and realize how much more beautiful they, too, would be if they were filled with.Horatio. The rest, as they say, is history. Contents LoreAn exceedingly rich and exceedingly eccentric trillionaire who was exceedingly tired of everything, Horatio left the Mezari empire on a solo voyage. Crossing the galaxy in suspended animation, Horatio was awakened by the ship when it arrived at a habitable planet–of which he immediately declared himself Emperor. Horatio used information culled from Endless ruins on the planet and its two moons to gain unnatural extension to his own life.
Endless Space 2 Depletion
In-system exploration led to other discoveries and eventually, through advanced medicines and biological adaptation, he evolved his own body into his vision of physical perfection.Boredom set in after a few years, however, until Horatio had the brilliant idea of filling the planet–and why not the galaxy?–with the brightest and most beautiful sentient creature ever to exist: Horatio. After a few decades of experimentation his cloning program achieved something between perfection and success. An army of equally gorgeous clones are now ready, and the hordes of Horatios are prepared to follow their glorious leader and give the galaxy a proper make-over.LeadershipThe problem with Horatio is creating other Horatios as brilliant and beautiful as the original, but a bit more willing to follow orders. While it is rumored that perfect copies have been made, it is also said that these perfect copies were every bit as dangerous and megalomaniacal as the original. The consequence of this is that Horatio remains the leading decision-maker and planner of his vast empire.
While some decisions have to be taken without his blessing due to pressures of time and money, these decisions–and the Horatio who make them–risk being canceled on a whim.HomeworldHoratio Prime is a world that in most other civilizations would serve as the vacation planet. Dry, warm, breezy, and beautiful, it is clear from the extensive Endless ruins that more than one spacefaring race has selected it as a preferred destination. Its current infrastructure projects tend to vary with Horatio's tastes; some buildings blend seamlessly with the landscape while others are garish and metallic statements of architectural extravagance.Society'The We', as they occasionally refer to themselves, is a society that has highly advanced cloning and biological sciences, but is relatively behind in other ways. Their goal is to re-create all of space in their own image, and to do this their primary need is to build the farms and incubators that grow Horatios. As they are humanoid, they require food, so development of agriculture and food supplies is also of great importance. As the First says, 'You can never have too many Horatios.' However, in spite of high population concentrations the society remains relatively calm and content; as Horatios have been carefully bred to be loyal and obedient, they lack the drive to seek change - especially violent change.

Necessity for survival will of course drive them to create weapons and more advanced ships, but their preference is to seek, colonize, and grow planets in the hopes of covering the galaxy with their kind.Traits Horatio AffinityGene Hunter: +5% Food consumption per Spliced Population on Original Empire Population. Can splice the genetic material of other factions to improve its population.
