My old computer died and I want to recover the data from the old HDD and move the files to my new computer. I've connected the HDD using a USB to SATA converter.
Once connected, my problems begin.A screenshot of my Computer Management - Storage is linked below in case it will help illustrate things.First, the old HDD (named Disc 1 at photobucket) is recognized as D:, E:, and F:, instead of it being one drive. The hard drive in my laptop is shown as Disc 2 and don't have any problems there. As shown in the link, D: is named System @ 100 MB NTFS however when I open the drive in Windows Explorer, there is only one file, 'System' with a type 'File' and size of 1 KB.E: and F: on the other hand, are shown as RAW data, and when I try to open either in Windows Explorer, I get an error message that reads 'Location is not available. E: is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect.' F: has the same error message.I've tried to research how to solve this, and unfortunately haven't had any luck with the solutions I've found online. I've tried (1) EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Free, (2) M3 Data Recovery; both the Data Recovery and RAW Drive Recovery Options, and (3) Testdisk from CGSecurity.org.
I've tried all 3 programs on D:, E:, and F: with no results.I'm hoping my data isn't gone, but am out of ideas to fix things. There are two other ideas I've read about, but haven't tried yet:(1) using the Administrator Command Prompt, type convert driveletter: /fs:ntfs, where driveletter is the letter of the drive you want to convert, and then press Enter. For example, convert E: /fs:ntfs would convert drive E to the NTFS format. This is shown as a Windows 7 solution (link below) and I'm on Windows 10.

I haven't tried this because of (a) the different Windows versions, (b) it says the conversion to NFTS isn't reversable and (c) the data is shown as RAW, not FAT16 or FAT32.(2) A friend suggested that the data on the old HDD may only be available if I boot the computer from the old HDD. I use Windows 10. I've explored F2 Setup and F12 Boot Options and I can't find how to do this, if this option even exists.Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks in advance. Proffitt already mentioned, you should never perform data recovery on a sole copy.

One mistake and data is gone forever. First clone it in it's entirety. This means cloning the entire physical disk, not logical volume such as 'D:'. The best way to do this is ddrescue. However if the drive doen't have bad sectors, you can use any program you like. In my experience though, when a volume is suddenly showing as RAW, it's usually a symptom of bad sectors. After you get a full clone, scan it using. Again, don't scan the logical volume, but scan the whole disk from beginning to end.
Be sure the 'scan for extra file types' box is checked when doing this as well. It may be tempting to stop the scan early to save time, DON'T! There's important indexing stored later on in the drive (usually near the 50% mark) which may be past all the other data. R-Studio can use this indexing to rebuild lost folder structure and file names that other data recovery software can't.
